Description:
Here is a Winchester you won't run across very often! This is a Special Order Semi Deluxe Model 1873 short rifle with 20" octagon barrel with a color case hardened frame and forend cap. Early 3rd Model in the 127,000 serial range.   Caliber is 32 WCF which fits perfectly into this little rifle's proportions.  Most 20" short rifles are typically found in caliber .44-40 and were sold as exports to countries like Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina where they typically saw very hard use. This one is unusual as it's in Caliber 32-20 WCF with the special finish. It was built in 1883 which was the 2nd year 32-20 was offered by Winchester.  My guess would be that it was custom ordered for a boy, a lady, and someone else suggested it could have been a salesman's sample as it was in a brand new caliber and would have been easier to tote.  It comes with a factory letter verifying its configuration and this is not a "made up" gun where someone took a record and built a rifle up around a phony serial number.  It's untouched with a nice patina that still shows some original finish. This rifle however is a bit more unusual in that since it's a very early 3rd Model, it has the shorter style rear sight that was used from 1873-1883.  Note how the rear sight dovetail sits closer to the frame than that of a standard rifle. .  If you look at the photos, you can see where the original blue is worn around the rear sight and the elevator has worn  This Short rifles has the correct and original forend that that measures 1" shorter than standard at 8.5" instead of the 9.5" found found on standard rifles with standard length. The dovetails for the magazine tube and sight at the front of the barrel are correct as well.  Last, the factory states:

Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Fine.  The frame has about 40% original case colors which break down into 10% bright colors in the protected areas, 10% very faint colors, and 20% colors that have faded to silver.  The balance of the frame has turned to a smooth light brown patina with no pits and crisp edges.  Hammer still shows 75% moderate case colors while the lever has just traces of colors remaining that is mostly a mixture of silver and brown patina.  The loading port has 50% of its original fire blue that's beginning to tone down a bit.  The barrel and magazine tube have approximately 50% original faded blue that is mixing through a pleasing light brown patina with blue stronger in the protected areas.  The stocks are in Very Good Plus Condition having never been cleaned or refinished.  Excellent wood to metal fit that has the factory fit where the wood is slightly proud of the metal.  No cracks, chips, or repairs.  The buttstock shows a little bit of figure in the walnut which is typical on semi-deluxe rifles as this rifle would have been stocked in the Winchester custom shop.  They typically ended up with the better cuts of wood than what was used in the main part of the factory although this wood wasn't fancy or symmetrical enough to grade as 1x-3x...which would have cost extra.  The mechanics on this rifle are crisp and the firing pin which cocks the hammer still has most of its original blue remaining.  The action is nice and snappy.  Bore was well taken care of...it's in Excellent Condition. I've been collecting Winchesters since 1984 and selling antique full time for the past 20 years.  In that time, I've had many unusual 1873 Winchester but never one in this  rare and attractive configuration.  Winchester should have made more of these!  Antique, Pre-1898. No FFL Required under Federal Law.  This will require an FFL to go to NJ.  No sales to NYC, Chicago, HI, or DC.  Buyer must be 18 years of age and a law-abiding US Citizen.  Sorry, no international sales.  $50 shipping in Lower US 48.
