Description:
Excellent condition original 1863-dated, 58 caliber Model 1861 percussion rifle-musket produced by William Mason at Mason Machine Works of Taunton, Massachusetts. Mason produced 30,000 muskets under subcontract from the Springfield Armory. Lockplate is stamped “U.S. / Wm. MASON. / TAUNTON” with the eagle motif forward of the hammer and “1863” behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Fine steel butt plate and other hardware in excellent condition. The 40″ long barrel has been well-cared for with a file mark 15” back from the muzzle where a pit must have been removed. The bore has strong rifling with moderate pitting the entire length. Other small dents and dings from normal use. Barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel is stamped with “VP” over eagle along with “1863”. Side facet of the barrel is stamped with inspector’s letter “H”. The original tulip-head, swelled shank steel ramrod rests in the groove in the forend of the stock. Rod retains its threaded tip. Stock is in excellent condition with no significant cracks or splits. Vivid inspector cartouches. This is a fine original Civil War contract longarm that will be a great addition to anyone's collection.
