Description:
STEVENS No. 70 “Visible Loading Repeater” PUMP ACTION .22 Cal. RF Rifle C&R

Light & Popular SLIDE ACTION Rifle From the ROARING TWENTIES

Here we present a C&R Stevens No. 70 “Visible Loading Repeater” Slide Action Rifle, made circa 1920 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. This rifle is chambered in .22 Caliber Rimfire and was purchased by and for boys and youth in the early 20th Century. This would have been the rifle that a boy learned on, plinked and hunted with.

The Visible Loading Repeater, commonly and eventually officially shortened to Visible Loader, was introduced in 1908, and products based on its action were in production through 1934. This type, which was known in the catalog as the Model 70 or No. 70, was replaced in 1931 by a slightly different version, the No. 71, but the action was the same. It's impossible to date them with much certainty thanks to both the loss of the company's records from before World War II and the fact that for some unknown reason they repeated serial numbers.

We know this one is from right around 1920, sometime after Savage took over because the markings on top still say "Visible Loading Repeater", but is also has the “SVG” cartouche on the left side of the receiver. This was changed to “Visible Loader” a little while after the Savage takeover on April 1, 1920. Also, Savage added an “SVG” cartouche to the left side of the receiver, which this rifle does have. Total production of the No. 70 was, as well as can be estimated, is somewhere north of 100,000, which implies that each serial number was used at least three and probably four times.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Original blue finish. Excellent action. bright, sharply rifled bore. The stock is solid containing an expected amount of wear (usual dent and dings). The barrel tang has been drilled and tapped.
