Description:
This is a nice representative example of the J.M. Cooper Firearms Mfg. Co. double-action Pocket Model percussion revolver in .31 caliber.  This particular example was made in the Philadelphia, PA. factory and is a 2nd Model made sometime between 1864 and 1869, falling in the serial range of 400 to 11,000.   The Cooper Pocket Model was a VERY unique gun in that it looked very similar to Colt's 1849 Pocket Model but was a double-action/single-action design.  Offered in barrel lengths of 4", 5", and 6" inches, the .31 caliber Pocket Model was finished with a gloss blue and color case hardened finish from the factory and featured a 5-shot unfluted cylinder, a octagon shaped barrel, a barrel-mounted loading lever, an oval shaped triggerguard opening, a brass or iron grip frame and triggerguard, and a 1-piece smooth American Walnut grip.  The sights consisted of a brass blade dovetailed into the barrel for the front sight and a notch cut in the nose of the hammer for the rear.  The Cooper Pocket Model proved to be a very good little revolver, and many collectors consider the early guns as secondary American Civil War revolvers.  As you can imagine, the rapid fire advantage that the double-action design gave the soldier that carried one of these would be very useful in combat, and could mean the difference between life and death.  This particular example is a 6" inch gun, serial number 10,527.  It is all-matching except for the loading lever, which appears to be an old replacement as it matches the rest of the gun in wear and patina.  The frame, the barrel, the cylinder, and both parts of the grip frame/triggerguard are all factory-stamped with the matching serial number of 10527.  The blue finish on the gun seems to be a mixture of original blue and some touch-up work that was done a long time ago.  As you can see from the pictures, it is handsome and certainly looks the part.  The bore in this Cooper still shows some rifling but there is scattered pitting throughout. The 5 chambers of the cylinder are in good condition overall but show some minor pitting mainly at the opening, and all five of the original nipples are still intact and in relatively good condition.  The factory marking on top of the barrel is lightly worn in places but still fully legible.  It reads "Cooper Firearms MFG. Co. Frankford Phila. PA" over the patent dates of "PAT. JAN 7 1851 APR 25 1854 SEP 4 1860 SEP 1 1863 SEP 22 1863".  The brass triggerguard on this Cooper is in good shape, free from any major damage or repairs, showing only minor handling marks and wear consistent with the rest of the gun.  The original 1-piece grip is in very good shape as well, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  The wood shows even wear all the way around and minor handling marks only.  The action on this Cooper is still functional and "in time" except for single-action operation.  When cocking the hammer by hand the hammer slips out of full cock. This could likely be repaired fairly easy by a gunsmith if the new owner so chooses.  The double action works perfectly.  All in all, this is a nice example of this very unique early double-action percussion revolver design and would be a great addition to any antique American firearms collection.
