Here we present an antique Civil War U.S. Colt Special Contract Model 1861 Percussion Rifle-Musket, produced in 1863 at the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Production began in September of 1862 while the war was in full swing. The Union was still trying to make up for arms shortages and the destruction of the Harpers Ferry Armory with production at Springfield, supplementing this with contracts with over 20 other contractors, like Colt, for rifle-muskets. Colt contracts with the Federal Government, along with State Governments, resulted in approximately 100,000 muskets being produced. This movie prop musket was almost certainly used in two of Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s most famous movies, including “Gone With the Wind” and “The Red Badge of Courage”, both Civil War movies. On May 3, 1970, the house David Weiz Company held the Metro Goldwyn Mayer . An individual named Walter O’Conner, who was employed by the house, became one of, if not the first collector to identify and actively collect “movie memorabilia firearms” in the Hollywood area. Mr. O’Connor specifically targeted a musket in that that was marked “MGM CB 28”. It is 100% documented that that particular musket was used by Audie Murphy in the 1951 production of “Red Badge of Courage”. Audie Murphy, of course was America’s most decorated soldier in World War II whose feats are an American legend. The American Civil War raged from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865 in which roughly 130,000 Special Model 1861 muskets were produced by Colt for the U.S. government. Like the Springfield production of the Model 1861, the Colt could be considered the “everyman’s” infantry weapon. This musket was cut shorter at some point, likely after its days in showbiz were through. A new front sight has been installed at the muzzle. The action is excellent. The bore is very nice with sharp rifling. The stock remains with signs of use. A very neat musket made during the American Civil War, later used in early motion pictures! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33-1/2 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
