GENERAL JOHN A. LOGAN INSCRIBED Antique REMINGTON NEW MODEL NAVY Revolver
Dedicated to Lt. Louis Kurz by Gen. “Black Jack” Logan
Here we present an antique Remington US Contract New Model Navy Revolver, made circa 1864 in Ilion, New York. This one is inscribed "GEN. JOHN A. LOGAN TO LT. LOUIS KURZ" along the backstrap in neat cursive handwriting. General John “Black Jack” Alexander Logan (1826-1886) was from Murphysboro, Illinois and enlisted in the Illinois 1st Infantry during the Mexican-American War, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Once the war was over he earned his law degree and shortly after went into politics: as county clerk (1849), Illinois House (1853-1857), and prosecuting attorney. He was twice elected to the US House of Representatives (1858 & 1860) before the American Civil War.
Once the war began, he was fighting with the Union as a volunteer and was at Bull Run (21 July 1861) with a unit from Michigan. After the battle, he returned to Illinois to raise the 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment, of which he was named Colonel. He led the 31st at Belmont (7 November 1861), Fort Donelson (15 February 1862), Corinth (3-4 October 1862), & Vicksburg and was promoted to Major General of Volunteers (21 March 1862). Though Logan was a “political general”, he was seen by many as extremely capable and a natural leader of military men. He commanded the 3rd Division of XVII Corps during Grant’s Vicksburg Campaign and he was placed in command of XV Corps during the Atlanta Campaign. He was wounded during the Battle of Atlanta (22 July 1864) and temporarily took command of the Army of the Tennessee. He was able to rejoin XV Corps to command them during Sherman’s Campaign in the Carolinas.
After the war, Logan would go on to switch parties and become a Republican, running successfully for the US House (1867-1871) and then the Senate (1871-1877 & 1879-1886). He helped to found the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans organization for Civil War soldiers, and was the second elected “commander in chief” of the association. He is remembered today as having been one of the strongest proponents of what we now observe as Memorial Day. On 3 March 1868 he issued General Order No. 11 to the GAR in which he called for an annual day of remembrance for Civil War KIA.
The recipient of this revolver, “Lt. Louis Kurz” is a bit more mysterious. There are records for multiple “Louis Kurz” in service during the war, including the famous Civil War lithograph artist and personal friend of President Lincoln (Louis Ferdinand Josef Kurz c1833-1921;
The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is dark with strong rifling. The front sight is an old replacement that was dovetailed in and brazed. The grips are solid with the exception of the thin crack at the rear of the left grip panel. Here is a wonderful piece of history that can be yours to cherish!
