STANDARD ISSUE of the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR!
Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol dated 1844 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol and was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican-American War.
This pistol features a captive ramrod on a swivel so that this crucial piece of the pistol would not be lost in the field. The large, steel-capped pommel would have been used as a blunt force weapon when necessary. The lock is marked “US / JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1844” below the brass pan. “US/JH/P” stamped atop the barrel. The left stock flat is marked with two oval cartouches with initials from Joseph Hannis and Captain William A. Thornton.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Smooth bore is in good shape. Solid stock with below average wear and legible cartouches on the left stock flat. A great piece of history!
