Description:
CHARLES LANCASTER, London, Anson Deeley Double Rifle, 470 NE, rebuilt entirely by Johann Fanzoj, Austrian best maker… Mint as restored.

Description
Chas. Lancaster, completely restored to as–new condition, regulated and tested by the Master Gunmaker Johann Fanzoj of Ferlach Austria. Originally built in  1909  (Serial Number 13142),  Johann Fanzoj has kept the rifle true to how it left the London maker with its chopper lump 28” barrels, open sights with white metal inlays, one standing leaf for 100 yards and one folding leaf for 200 yards. The barrels are engraved true to the gun’s original maker, “CHARLES LANCASTER” and “FOR CORDITE .470 3 ¼” CASE.”

If you want to impress your PH, this rifle will widen his eyes and leave him with his mouth open!

The restored lock is the tried and true Lancaster Anson Deeley triple lock with automatic safety and extractors.  For its triple lock, it combines the renowned Purdey double underbite system (in the Lancaster, it’s very heavy duty) with a massive doll’s head third lock. This has always been a sought-after system for big bores that must be made entirely by hand and those knowing how to build them have been few and rare.

The action engraving is the original English rose and scroll, as “picked up” during the restoration. The barrels are tight as new on the breech face and on the hinge pin, with strong bores to last another lifetime, screws are perfect, and the engraving is strong and clear and precisely executed. The Lancaster Anson Deeley triple lock action was one of the best ever made for big bores which is why Fanzoj chose to preserve this one.

For their re-stocking work, Johann Fanzoj chose a beautiful piece of walnut from the Caucasus Mountains, in near exhibition grade showing dark reddish brown color with much flamboyant figure.  As are all Fanzoj stocks, the wood is finished with French Oil Polish and true to its Lancaster roots, it sports an original but new Silvers red rubber recoil pad (Silvers pads have been available for decades – still in demand today). Length of pull is 14.9 inches; gun weighs 10.2 lbs or 4.7 k

Condition
Completely restored to as-new condition and tested by Johann Fanzoj. After regulating the barrels, the team at Fanzoj said “the gun is exceptionally accurate and a pleasure to shoot.” Included is an Authentication Certificate by CHARLES LANCASTER and a proof target from Fanzoj.

Barrel blue 99%, French gray 99%, wood 99%, checkering 100%, Fanzoj’s usual meticulous fit and finish…all total for just spectacular original condition. It comes with its oak & leather trunk case with slight restoration and correct maker's label.

Price: $29,750.00

About Chas Lancaster
The company Chas Lancaster started as a premier barrel maker for most of the London gun maker trade. His barrels were so precise, he was encouraged to become a full gunmaker himself. Geoffrey Boothroyd in his book, Sidelocks & Boxlocks, states that the “celebrated sportsman and author Colonel Hawker refers to Lancaster in his book, Young Sportsmen, and tells that it was on his advice that Lancaster produce guns in his own name, “that if the rest of the gun was as good as his barrels, he would have no fear as to his standing... and [would make a] fortune.”  Lancaster set up his business in 1826 at 151 New Bond Street near Holland & Holland. The company became the “go to” company for big bore guns and patented their famous oval boring for rifle barrels in 1850. In the days of the black powder, oval-bore barrels were the best for their longevity between cleaning. The company was also known for its howdah pistols (emergency shots at charging tigers from the elephant’s howdah), and especially their big howdah pistol with four barrels.  The latter are highly sought-after collector pieces today. But from the beginning, Lancaster’s guns were considered best guns and on par with or exceeded other London gunmakers. During the Great Depression, like so many small makers of perfection, the company closed in 1932 as Lancaster, and its name and inventory were purchased by Stephen Grant and Joseph Lang (two other best London gunmakers).

About Johann Fanzoj
Ferlach, a small town in the south of Austria, is the mecca of Austrian gunmaking (the art of gunmaking) and dates back to the early 16th century. For more than nine generations the Fanzoj family has played a significant role in shaping this proud tradition, their gunmaking family going back to 1790. The firm Fanzoj stepped out of anonymity and into history in 1906 when it established itself as a purveyor to the Imperial court of Franz Joseph I. The firm took the name of Johann Fanzoj when Johann became a master gunmaker in 1960. Each year only a small number of exclusive guns and rifles leave Johann Fanzoj´s workshop, amazing works of art that have propelled his name into the worldwide elite of specialty and boutique makers of best guns.

In 2008, the Johann Fanzoj company invested in a new facility with state-of-the-art manufacturing integrating all work steps with a commitment to continue the highest quality while still meeting the increasingly demand of their high-profile clientele. With the new facility, Johann Fanzoj combines centuries-old knowledge of traditional techniques with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. A Fanzoj gun or rifle is planned and built one at a time, with hundreds, and sometimes thousands of hours involved in a single project, and completed and finished by hand with engraving executed only by master engravers.

Johann Fanzoj rifles are technical masterpieces, as complex as a mechanical Swiss watch, but also required to withstand the high gas pressures of thousands of joules. They must, at the same time, work smoothly and reliably under varying and sometimes adverse environmental conditions.

Today, the name Johann Fanzoj stands for one of the world´s premier gunmakers. Their firearms are mechanical masterpieces as well as ‘objects of eternity´ – a perfect blend of cutting-edge technology with centuries-old craftsmanship.
