Description:
General Specs: Merkel, Year 1943, 16 Gauge, 6lbs, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 11/16", DAH 2 3/8", DAC 1 9/16"
Serial Number: 27370

What an amazing find we have here!  This gun is nearly unfired, with 99% FACTORY CASE COLOR, BARREL BLUE, AND WOOD FINISH.  Proof marked with Nazi era 1943 proof marks, the gun is still tight as new on hinge pin and breech face.  In the world of Merkels, the Model 400E is almost never seen, especially in 99% + factory original condition.  The Model 400E differs from the Model 200E only in that the back of the action is not fully scalloped.  The 400E was an  entry level gun for Merkel in 1943, but today the Merkel collector would be hard pressed to ever find one for his/her collection.  The pre-war era Merkel over/under is a precisely made, finely balanced upland gun, this one weighing just 6lbs. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin.  For the true upland doublegun enthusiasts, this gun is set up with the very-hard-to-find double triggers, near impossible to find 16ga. Over/under barrels, ejectors, English style grip, and the slim field-style forend.  The 27 5/8” barrels are presently choked F/F in true German fashion with mirror perfect bores, 2 ¾” chambers, and a classy solid rib.  Our gunsmithing department can quickly change the chokes to your preference withing 5 days of purchase.  The case color is bold and 100% coverage, the screws are perfect, the triggers crisp, the ejectors strong and perfectly timed.  This gun has only a few light handling marks and I doubt it has ever been carried afield.  The straight-hand European walnut stock is nicely figured with fiddleback vertical lines on both sides of the stock, has near perfect sharp checkering, perfect wood-to-metal fit, 14 11/16” LOP to a finely checkered butt and modern shooting dimensions.  Again, our gunsmithing department can add a leather pad or bend the stock to your needs within 5 days of purchase.  You will search for a very long time to find a 16 bore over/under from a known and desirable maker with double triggers, ejectors, and a straight grip, especially in near new condition and 78 years old!  I get to handle a LOT of fine upland guns, and this one is definitely special.  Don’t let such a unique and desirable Merkel over/under get away.  See the full specifications below.  There is still a lot of hunting season ahead and we are close enough to Christmas where you can treat yourself to a nice gift!  Thanks for looking.
