Description:
This is a very nice, all-original, U.S. Civil War period U.S. Model 1840 pattern Cavalry Sword, otherwise known as the "Wrist Breaker".  This particular example is in very good condition, never modified or "improved", and comes complete with it's original steel scabbard. This sword is totally unmarked except for the letter "K" stamped three times on the right-side ricasso, most likely an inspector's marking, and was likely imported from Europe as many of these swords were.  As this sword is not marked "U.S.", it is possible that this sword was Confederate-used.  Used by both the Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War, the Model 1840 Cavalry Sword was a sturdy and well-made sword that was well-known for inflicting heavy damage to the enemy.  The knickname 'Wrist Breaker" was given to this sword due to it's heavy weight which could cause damage to the cavalry soldier's wrist if not swung properly.  The U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Sword was replaced by the Model 1860 Cavalry Sword in 1860, but remained in widespread use in battles all over the country.  This particular sword is very handsome and in good condition.  The blade is straight and without damage with an intact tip, and it has a uniform cutting edge with no nicks or cracks.  The handle still retains the original leather wrap as well as the original twisted wire, both of which are tight to the handle.  The leather shows some wear and minor flaking but is in stable condition.  The twisted wire is 100% intact and completely original.  The brass basket of the handle is in excellent condition, free from any cracks, bends, or major damage, showing only some minor handling marks you would expect to see on a combat-used sword from the Civil War.  The pommel is in perfect shape and even the original leather washer on the front of the handguard is still in-place and fully intact.  The scabbard itself is in great shape as well, with a degree of wear and patina consistent with the sword.  The scabbard is free from any cracks, dents, or bends, and both the drag and the throat are in perfect shape.  Both hangers are fully intact and in excellent condition.  If you have been looking for a high-condition all-original U.S. Model 1840 pattern Wrist Breaker cavalry sword that may be Confederate, here it is!
