Description:
WINCHESTER 1890 PUMP Action TAKEDOWN Rifle in SCARCE .22 Winchester Rimfire

1910s Easy Takedown Rifle

Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle chambered in .22 Winchester Rimfire, manufactured in 1912 in New Haven, Connecticut. In the late 1880s, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company asked John Moses Browning to design a replacement for the Model 1873 rifle, since the rim fire version of the Model 1873 had never achieved any great popularity. On June 26, 1888, a patent for the new design was issued to John & Matthew Browning. Under this patent, Winchester created the second repeating slide action .22 rifle ever successfully developed and manufactured, being narrowly edged out by the Colt Lightning small frame carbine The Model 1890 proved to be the most successful repeating rim fire rifle for general all around shooting ever made by Winchester. Approximately 775,000 Model 1890 rifles were produced between 1890 and 1932. For many years, the Model 1890 was considered to be the standard for use in shooting galleries, hence its nickname of "gallery gun."

The Model 1890 was produced in three distinct versions. The first model had a solid frame, a case-hardened receiver, and a fixed rear sight. There were approximately 15,552 of these were produced between 1890 and 1892 with a serial number range between 1 and 15,552. The second model was designed as a takedown rifle. It also had a case-hardened receiver, but this model had an adjustable rear sight. Just under 100,000 second model rifles were produced with case hardened receivers and had a serial number range between 15,553 and 112,970. After the first 100,000 second models were produced, they switched over to a blued frame variation which included serial numbers 112,971 through 325,250 which was just over 210,000. A deluxe version was offered, which featured a fancy checkered walnut stock available in either straight or pistol grip and a grooved slide handle. The third model was also produced as a takedown rifle and featured a modified receiver that allowed the breech bolt to lock externally. The third model was serial numbered from 325,251 up to as high as 853,000 and was also available in a deluxe version, which, similar to the second model, featured a fancy checkered walnut stock available in either straight or pistol grip and a grooved slide handle.

In April 1919, Winchester eliminated the “18” and “19” from the model names of all of the various models that were in active production. So, after this date, the Model 1890 would become the Model 90.
