SPECIAL ORDER 1892 .38-40 ROUND NICKEL STEEL BARREL RIFLE WITH HALF MAGAZINE, #493XXX, MADE 1909. Most 1892s were considered hunting/ranch rifles and few are found with special features. This one has the standard 24" round barrel marked "NICKEL STEEL" which is rarely seen and must be considered special ordered. It also has the "button" or 1/2 magazine and crescent butt plate. It is in particularly fine condition with the barrel retaining most of the original blue and shows excellent sharp markings. The barrel is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a small blade/bead front sight. The receiver shows excellent blue on the bolt with the right side showing fine blue more toward the rear half and the front portion thinning and mixing gray. The left side of the receiver shows fine blue with wear toward the forward lower edge and bottom. Screws appear unturned and the upper tang retains about all the blue. The upper tang also has the scarce small "MOD.. 1892" just behind the hammer. This marking was used on rifles with serial numbers around 500000 for rifles intended for export mainly to Great Britain or her colonies! Interestingly, there are no foreign proof marks on this rifle and I have seen others like this that also do not have any foreign proof marks. Wood is fine showing light handling only and tight wood to metal fit. Action is also tight and the bore is bright and excellent with sharp rifling all the way through. Lots of mystery and history in this one!
