Description:
UNUSUAL AND AMAZINGLY RARE 1894! ONE OF THE VERY LAST .38-55 CALIBER CARBINES PRODUCED, #1085XXX, MADE 1932! The .38-55 chambering was officially discontinued in 1929.  By that year, there was very little demand for this caliber and few were produced in the decade or more leading up to Winchester dropping the caliber. It seems as the Great Depression was upon the country after the stock market crash of 1929, Winchester still had a few .38-55 barrels on hand. With sales dropping through the basement, Winchester decided to use up these obsolete barrels or fit them on special order. Obviously, this was one. Interestingly, in 1913 Winchester produced 57,586 Model 1894s. By 1927 the number produced was down to 29,967 and in 1932 Winchester produced only 3,679 1894s and two years further into the Depression in 1934 only 1,192 were made! This makes all of these Great Depression Era 1894s rare. Most made during this time were in the popular .30 WCF (.30-30) caliber. There couldn't be more than a handful made chambered in .38-55. This is the second one I've encountered in the last many years. It has the early carbine style steel butt plate with matching forend. True to the time period, it has no saddle ring and also correct is the buckhorn rear sight with patent date of 1927, with short elevator bar, paired with a typical carbine front sight. Importantly, the barrel is correctly stamped "-MODEL 94- NICKEL STEEL- 38-55-" along with the late tang markings etc. This is important because it proves this is not simply a carbine with an earlier barrel fitted outside the factory. These are the correct markings for a 1932 vintage '94. The barrel and magazine retain about all the original deep blue. Even the barrel band shows fine blue with wear to the outside edge only. The receiver blue is also fine and showing normal signs of dulling and thinning with edge /bottom/receiver ring wear- all typical of the receiver blue applied during this time that flaked very easily. The loading gate retains excellent bright blue, screws are excellent and retain fine blue., and the sides of the lever retain fine blue. The walnut stock and forend are excellent and the butt stock shows better than standard grade walnut grain. Wood to metal fit is tight. The action is tight and the bore is MINTY BRIGHT. Even the most complete 1894 collections probably lack one of these last .38-55 carbines.
