Description:
Colt Civil War Holster modified flap design was the idea of Col. Hagner, C.O. Watervliet Arsenal.  It was used to modify holsters of various patterns and incorporated in the design of the 1878 pattern holster.  Maker marked E. Gaylor - Chicopee, Mass.  Shows normal age crazing.  Bottom with no plug, instead sewn closed (Looks like it was done at the arsenal) with drain hole.

At some time someone has cut two pieces out of the belt loop (crudley done) probably needed leather for something.  Still a rare holster - Pre 1878.  See page 85 U.S. MILITARY HOLSTERS By Scott Meadows.
