When the first production contract was awarded to Colt, the Government was aware that Colt was unable to meet the service demands for the new Browning pistol, consequently the Historic U.S. Springfield Armory was awarded a supplemental production contract. Serial number range for the Springfield pistols was 72,571 to 133,186 produced between April 1914 and April 1917. The rarity of this 1911 pistol to a military collector is without question. Any 45 1911 pistol collection would be missing a "key stone" firearm without this historic piece. The serial number, 74752 places this gun as one of the first pistols produced and most likely went to the Marine Corps or Navy, Reference Clawson's book "The Collector's Guide to Colt .45 Service Pistols Model of 1911 and 1911A1".
