Description:
1885 HIGHWALL IN HARD TO FIND AND DESIRABLE .45-70 CALIBER, #3 WEIGHT 30" OCTAGON BARREL, #52XXX, MADE 1891, WILL LETTER. According to the call-in sheet I requested from the Cody Museum, this rifle will letter just as it is and was received in the warehouse on December 4, 1891 and shipped the same day. This one shows some frontier usage and was probably carried in a saddle scabbard as it shows typical wear to the rear 1/3 of the butt stock where the scabbard doesn't protect the wood. Also, the wrist shows a typical cross bolt frontier/blacksmith repair from what was probably a horse "rollover" or perhaps the rifle butt stock carried in the forward position (never smart, but done frequently!) where it can go to the north side of a tree while the horse rubs himself on the south side! Either of these can cause a cracked or broken stock every time and is commonly found on frontier used rifles that were carried on horseback especially in the west. This rifle has a couple of thin crack lines coming back a very short way from the upper tang and another similar one coming back from the lower tang, hence the cross bolt to tighten the stock wrist- which it accomplished nicely. Very tight wood to metal fit on both the forend and stock. The forend shows very light handling only and retains the ebony wedge inlay in the schnable tip. The forend also has the date "1897" lightly scratched in small numerals on the left side. The barrel shows aged and thinning blue mixing with brown and gray. Fine barrel address and caliber markings, has a long buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar that looks more Ballard than Winchester and a short Rocky Mountain blade front sight. Action is very tight and the bore is fairly bright with strong rifling all the way through with some wear ahead of the chamber and any roughness very scattered, light and surface that ought to brush out better. Very hard to find caliber in the Highwall even though 3,032 were made so chambered- no doubt many were destroyed for their actions in the 1930s-1950s to make varmint rifles with this was a fad. Nice 130 year old frontier used Winchester Single Shot.
