This is one of approximately 700 Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 Navy rifles produced during its short production run. This is among the scarcest and rarely seen Civil War Martial arms. Roughly 600 of these arms were ordered by the Navy on July 29,1861 with saber bayonets at the cost of $36.00 each. The remaining 100 are assumed to have been sold to the civilian market with those also surely being used in the war. Most of the rifles were used to arm Marine guards aboard ships, and some were used on gunboats on the Mississippi River. The serial number of this rifle adds to the rarity. With only a total of 700 produced, this number “32” was one of the first produced and likely manufactured just months after the start of the war. The shape of the carbine is distinctly Sharps and operates a bit differently than other carbines of the era. The trigger guard doubles as a lever, which is opened by pressing a small tab inside the smaller loop of the lever. Opening the lever slides the barrel away from the recoil shield for loading and unloading. The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. The bore shows signs of use and remains in good condition with sharp, deep rifling. The walnut stock is solid and is marked “F.R” (hand carved) on the left buttstock. A true rarity from the Union Navy and Marines during the American Civil War! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32-3/4 inches. Caliber: .52 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
