Description:
This is a VERY nice all-original World War 2 German P-38 pistol brought back to the States as a war trophy by an American G.I.  This P-38 is a "byf 44" marked gun where "byf" is Mauser Oberndorf's wartime code and the date of manufacture is 1944.  These codes were given to the manufacturers in an attempt to hide where they were being made from the Allies, thus preventing the factories from being bombed.  The P-38 pistol was the successor to the German's P-08 Luger, designed to be much faster and cheaper to manufacture than the P-08.  The semi-auto P-38 featured DA/SA operation that the Luger lacked, a factory military blue finish, a left-side slide-mounted thumb safety/decocker, a 8-round single-stack magazine, a heel-mounted magazine release, a loaded chamber indicator at the rear of the slide, an exposed hammer, a 1-lever take-down design, and grooved Bakelite grips.  The P-38 quickly proved to be an excellent combat pistol, very reliable, durable, and accurate.  This pistol served the German Military until the end of the war, with P-38's being produced until the very last months of WW2.  This particular example is in superb condition inside and out, with all of the numbered parts matching and the original factory finish fully  intact.  The "military blue" factory finish on this byf44 is in excellent condition, rating 96% with the only deductions coming from a touch of high-edge wear in spots from being carried in a holster.  All of the factory markings are crisp and clean, and all of the German Military Waffenamts are intact and legible.  The serial numbered parts are all original factory-stamped including the barrel, frame, slide, and locking block.  The bore in this Mauser is shiny and mirror-bright, showing strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel with no visible wear or imperfections.  The original Bakelite grips on this P-38 are in excellent shape and are very handsome.  Both grip panels are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or visible wear.  Both grip panels match each other perfectly in color and patina, and they both are tight on the gun with no wiggle.  The action on this Mauser is slick and smooth and the slide-to-frame fit is excellent. The slide goes into battery with the barrel perfectly with no slop, and all of the controls on this pistol are in perfect working order, including the safety/decocking lever.  This byf44 should still function just as well today as the day it left the factory 77 years ago.  This Mauser P-38 comes complete with one original WW2-production magazine, also in very good working condition. The magazine is marked on the left side "jvd", which was a producer of P38 magazines for Mauser late in the war.   If you have been looking for an all-original investment-quality WW2 P-38 for your collection this Mauser byf44 would be the perfect choice.  They don't get much better than this one!
