Description:
This is an outstanding 1968 production Colt AR-15 SP1 semi-automatic rifle. It has the early style upper receiver with no provisions for a forward assist and the correct early Colt "triangle" proof mark on the upper receiver. The lower receiver has the Colt  markings with  serial number " SER SP13544" indicating production at about fall of 1968.  It is fitted with the early original Colt marked parts such as the original non-chrome lined barrel with and "s" & "12" marking. The right side of the barrel beneath the sight post rings is stamped with the proof "M" and triangle Colt stamping. The barrel is fitted with the early three-prong flash hider with correct ' checkered ' lock washer. The bore is beautiful and shiny. It has the Colt bolt carrier with 28 notches on the right side added in 1968. While not needed for the SP1 rifles, this was added on M16a1 rifles and resulted in the use on SP1. SP1 rifles often used modified military parts. The bolt is also the early Colt version tmarked "M" and "P". . It still retains its original first generation (and very rare) old style, large head, two-piece 'Edgewater' recoil buffer. It is also fitted with  early triangular handguards (early unmarked versions lacking the "R" and "L" on the inner aluminum shields.) Features the early style buttstock. The buttstock is indeed, the early version that lacks any provisions for the internal storage compartment, that is correctly fitted with a solid rubber/plastic buttplate with no provisions for the later trap door. It also has the rubber coated swinging sling swivel. The ejection port cover is of the earlier style having the roll pin holding in the longer spring and detent. The pin housing was longer as well. This was later changed to a shorter 'crimp' style securing method. Also note on these earlier rifles the upper receiver cast was smoother and lighter with deeper lines.
