Description:
This is a handsome non-import marked Royal Italian Army Carcano Model 1891 Cavalry Carbine in 6.5x52mm Carcano manufactured by the R.E. Terni arsenal in 1935 just prior to WW2.  This little cavalry carbine appears to be a WW2 bring-back trophy and all-original, except for the bolt being cleaned/polished at some point and the Royal Italian crown symbol has been peened-out.  The Model 1891 Cavalry Carbine or "Moshetto Modello 91 da Cavalleria" was first adopted in 1893 and was designed to be a compact and easily portable cavalry weapon at a time when horse-mounted troops were still in widespread use.  The bolt-action repeating 1891 Cavalry Carbine was chambered in the 6.5x52mm Carcano cartridge and featured a factory blue finish on the metal parts, a 17.63" inch barrel with a folding spike bayonet just under 13.5" inches in length, a rear sight with a fixed blade good to 300 meters and an adjustable portion graduated from 450 to 1500 meters, a two-piece straight-gripped stock set with a small upper handguard (cut-out for the adjustable rear sight portion to lay forward when not in use), and an action design that used a 6-shot clip inserted from the top with the bolt open that dropped thru the bottom of the gun when empty.  These carbine remained in production until the end of WW1, then went back into production from 1932 until 1938 after the Fascists took over.  This particular example is a very good looking carbine and is in perfect working condition.  The original factory blue finish is still attractive and bright, showing light wear and handling marks that you would expect to see on a combat-used weapon.  All of the factory stampings on this rifle are crisp and legible except for the crown that was peened-out on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver.  This was likely done as an anti-fascist sentiment by the soldier that captured it and brought it to the States.  As mentioned before, the bolt in this 1891 Cavalry Carbine has been cleaned and polished at some point in the last few decades, however, all of the factory markings on the bolt are clean and clear.  The bore in this carbine is in great shape overall, free from any bulges, major imperfections, or pitting.  The rifling is still strong and sharp from the chamber to the muzzle, with only some very light frosting in the grooves.  The original stock on this Carcano is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  The buttstock still has the original stamped matching serial number intact on the left side of the butt as well as a nice visible factory cartouche on the left side just below the receiver.  Unfortunately the Royal Italian Army cartouche on the left side of the butt is extremely faint and no longer legible, located just ahead of the sling bar on the left side of the buttstock.  The small upper handguard on this Carcano is intact and in-place, and in good condition overall.  Often this handguard is completely missing on these carbines.  In this case, it is a perfect match in every way to the stock from color to condition.  There appears to be a small crack in the rear sight relief portion of the handguard, although we cannot get it to open up by applying pressure.  All of the original stock hardware is intact on this carbine and in good shape overall, including the buttplate, sling bar, upper barrel band/sling mount, and all of the original screws/fasteners.  The action on this Carcano is smooth and slick, and it locks into battery with the barrel nice and tight with no wiggle.  All of the controls on this Cavalry Carbine are also in perfect working order, including the early lever-style bayonet latch for the integral folding spike bayonet.  We have no doubt that this weapon will still function just as well today as the day it left the Terni factory over 86 years ago.  If you have been looking for a nice representative example of a World War 2 Royal Italian Army 1891 Cavalry Carbine here is your chance to get a handsome NON-Import marked veteran bring-back.
