In November 2006, Smith & Wesson announced that it would re-enter the shotgun market with two new lines of shotguns, the Elite Series and the semi-automatic 1000 Series, unveiled at the 2007 SHOT Show.[3] Both series were manufactured in Turkey.[3]
The Elite Series was offered in two variants:[2]
- Elite Gold – 20-gauge, side-by-side, barrel lengths 26 or 28 in (66 or 71 cm)
- Elite Silver – 12-gauge, over-and-under, barrel lengths 26, 28, or 30 in (66, 71, or 76 cm)

Test team members devoted three months to rigorously testing each product during a process dubbed the "Field & Stream Torture Test." Products were shot, bent, driven and dropped during the testing period to insure that each model truly represented the “Best of the Best.” The Smith & Wesson Elite Gold combines traditional handcraftsmanship with modern technology in a classic field shotgun. Offering a perfect blend of form and function, each shotgun features a gracefully rounded and sculptured receiver made possible by the patent-pending trigger-plate round body action. The 20-gauge shotgun features a hand engraved receiver, rustblued, chopper-lump barrels and AAA (grade III) Turkish walnut stocks. With a perfect wood to metal fit, each Elite Gold shotgun is capped off with a hand-cut checkered stock, a white bead front sight and a brass mid-bead sight. The Elite Gold Series is available with either a single or double trigger along with a Prince of Wales or straight English style stock.
