Description:
SALE PENDING.... (More photos)....LAYAWAY? .58 cal, 33” barrel with a bright very good plus bore showing some scattered light oxidation and pinprick pitting in the grooves with otherwise strong rifling throughout. This rifle shows proper .58 caliber bore and addition of a saber bayonet adapter consistent with those converted by Colt, but the rear sight is not the correct Colt style, instead being an 1863-style rifle-musket sight. The barrel and lock have mostly toned to a deep plum-brown patina showing some scattered very light old pitting and remnants of minor oxidation. The breech shows “US / ADK / VP” proofs along with “STEEL” and the barrel is numbered adjacent to and matching the bayonet adapter “3572”. The tang is dated “1854” and the lockplate is “1855” and retains strong Whitney markings. The brass fittings show evidence of an old cleaning with scattered fine striations and small dings taking on a mix of goldenrod and ocher patina. The buttplate is stamped with the initials “FDT” and there are some evident grind marks along the bayonet lug. The smooth walnut stock remains in very good condition showing remnants of an older period added finish with a number of thin cracks around the upper tang, left flat and edges of the forend, and the expected overall dings and handling marks. The left stock flat retains a pair of evident inspector cartouches and the patchbox contains a spare nipple and Model 1855 multi-tool that has toned to dark brown patina. An antique tulip ramrod is present, the front sight is an antique replacement wider and taller blade and the lock seems to function well mechanically. An interesting example for the U.S. antique martial arms collector..S/H $45....2nd FIREARM SHIPS FREE WITH THIS ONE! Thanks...Greg 2-3
