Description:
This Colt Artillery Single Action Army Revolver retains much of its’ period finish with only a few spots of corrosion. The frame has nicely faded color case hardening still visible. The bore is mostly clean and un-pitted with the exception of one corrosion spot mid-way. It has sharp deep rifling and shows little use. Kopec reports that the inside chambers of the cylinders retain all of their originally applied blue finish indicating that this revolver had not been appreciably fired at all. The rear of the cylinder is marked R.A.C. The grips are excellent with just a bit of age showing and R.A.C. marked on the bottom. The action is smooth and strong with good lock up.
Controversy arises when you review the two Letters.
The Colt Letter must have been based upon a verbal request because it provides information on the only serial number,16848, marked on the trigger guard. It shows it to be Shipped to U.S. Commanding Officer, Manila P.I. in 1901.
Colt’s records are based upon the number marked on the frame. As we know these revolvers had all of their parts mixed during refurbishing.
This frame has no serial number, and the Patent dates are listed on 3 lines rather than the more common 2-line format. This Three Line frame is one of 171 manufactured during the 1880’s. These “No-Number” frames did NOT have the U.S. stamped on them.
After studying both letters I’ve come to the conclusion that this is either assembled from parts as Kopec suggests or a “No-Number” artillery that has had some up-grades over the years.
In either case, it presents as an excellent example of a Colt Artillery.
This is a great addition to any Colt or Military Collection or a fantastic accent piece for your office or den. Serial number 16848.  Cal. .45 Colt with a 5 ½” barrel. It will be shipped with both letters and the custom presentation case as shown.
