Description:
Serial #3424, .38 Long Colt, 3 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. The metal surfaces of this 1878-made revolver retain about 80-85% of the original nickel finish with most of the loss due to flaking along the cylinder and gripstraps, revealing the underlying pewter gray metal, as well as some mild gray-brown freckling. One of the cylinder chambers has a deep impact mark that impinges slightly into the chamber and there are faint scratches elsewhere on the cylinder. There are a number of tiny handling marks at the toe of the backstrap, obscuring the serial number somewhat, and some of the screw heads have slot wear. All of the remaining markings are otherwise quite crisp, including the etched "COLT D.A. 38" panel on the left side of the barrel. The protected areas of the trigger and back of the hammer retain much of their original brilliant fire blue, with the balance silvered to mottled gray, and a few of the screw heads also retain traces of fire blue. The flat side of the base pin head has been ground down very slightly, and there is no loading gate installed, although a separate gate is included with the gun. The revolver has its original, highly desirable one-piece checkered hard rubber grip with Rampant Colt on either side. The grip is pencil-numbered matching and remains in fine-near excellent condition with only a few tiny handling marks scattered about, and minimal flattening of the deep checkering points. The action is mechanically fine, and functions in both single and double action with very good timing and lock-up. This is an attractive example of a desirable early Lightning with an intact grip.
