The smoothbore .69 caliber barrel has a very good bore and is 14½" long. Metal is mostly bright with scattered stains. Stock is fine with sharp edges and no cracks or chips. This carbine appears to be the model 1828. It has an unreinforced cock. The lock is dated “1831" (831) with the Austrian double head eagle ownership stamp to the rear. The top of the barrel is stamped “IH" This signifies that maker is Josef Heitzenberger of Vienna. The barrel is also stamped “853" on the side. The barrel tang is stamped “8E/85". The butt plate tang is stamped “3H". Stock cheek piece has a small “LNC" stamped in it. The ramrod and sling rings are present. The touch hole is pristine. This appears to be an unfired gun. The action functions correctly. The percussion Civil War variants of the later Austrian carbines are relatively common. An early flintlock model like this one is very rarely encountered.
