Here we present an Antique Frederick Leatherman Heavy Barreled Back Action Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. Leatherman was a gunsmith who worked between 1850 and 1900 out of Dayton, Ohio. This rifle is extremely heavy and would have been most ideally used off a bench or a stump. In fact, this one has two small brass rails on the barrel that appear to have been added for some kind of rest. Its stout octagonal barrel has a massive .63 caliber, large enough to take pretty much any size game in North America. Double set triggers and a back action lock make for a very precise set up. The striped maple stock has German silver hardware.
The overall condition is near fine. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape. “F. LEATHERMAN” is clearly read on the top of the barrel. “F.D.P.” is engraved on the patchbox lid. This example has been drilled and tapped on the barrel tang for an aperture sight. A solid and hefty rifle with a handsome maple stock for that promises to shoot well and make for an impressive show piece!
