The Model 1866 50-70 caliber was the first 50-70 cartridge made for the US army and used in the early western Indian wars in battles such as t e wagon box and hayfield fights. This one is still in very good original condition with a good bore and mechanicaly sound. The full 3 band dark walnut stock is in very good condition showing dents and wear of its period of use.. all metal parts have a smooth brow patina. The full length barrel has both correct front and rear site. The functioning lock is marked US Springfield and is dated 1864. The breach block is marked 1866 with the eagle head. This rifle has numerous military unit markings and rack numbers on the but plate stock and breach. The rifle appears correct and complete with the ramrod. Overal a very nice 1866 Springfield.
