Description:
This is a very cool and unusual vintage Hopkins & Allen Triple-Action Safety Police Hammerless double-action only revolver in .32 S&W complete with a period leather holster. Unlike most of the Hopkins & Allen Triple-Action Safety Police revolvers made, this example is a hammerless model with a nickel plated finish, a 4" inch barrel, and factory Walnut target grips. This top-break revolver was introduced in 1908 by Hopkins & Allen as their "flagship" model with the firm's new lock mechanism. Offered in two frame sizes and chamberings of .22, .32, and .38 caliber, this model was fitted with a barrel ranging from 2" to 6" inches in length and was normally fitted with hard rubber grips. As mentioned before, most of the Triple-Action Safety Police revolvers were DA/SA with an exposed hammer and a short barrel, but H&A did make small numbers of the DA-only hammerless variations. These revolvers were very nicely built with top quality materials, excellent fit and finish, and a large amount of hand-fitting and tuning. They quickly became recognized as one of the best top-break revolvers made by any of the firms at that time, and remain highly regarded by collector's today. This particular example is serial number P4557, likely made sometime in the last 4 years of production. It is a very nice all-original example that is exactly how it left the factory, it has not been modified or "improved" in any way. As mentioned before, it is a scarce variation in that it has four major things going for it; it is a hammerless DA-only model, it has a factory nickel plated finish, it is fit with a factory 4" inch barrel, and it is fit with factory Walnut "Target" grips. All four of these features are in the minority when compared to overall production. This Hopkins & Allen is in very good condition overall with perfect mechanics. The factory nickel plated finish is still bright and clean, showing only some very minor spots of marring and plating loss. The original blue finish on the triggerguard, top latch levers, and ejection star is in great shape, and the original case colors on the trigger still show some color on the sides. All of the factory markings are crisp and clear, and all of the serial numbered parts are matching and original. The bore in the 4" inch barrel is in excellent condition with perfect rifling and no visible pitting or erosion. The five chambers of the cylinder are in great shape as well, free from any major defects or pitting. The special-option factory Target grips on this Safety Police are in beautiful shape, free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage. Outside of a little minor damage to the rear edge of the butt both grip panels are clean and all of the factory finish is still intact. The grips match each other perfectly in every way and fit perfectly on this revolver with no wiggle or play in them. Both original grip screws as well as the 4 escutcheons are in excellent condition. The action on this little H&A Safety Police Hammerless is incredibly smooth and precise, and it turns in perfect time no matter how fast or slow you pull the trigger. All of the controls on this revolver are in perfect working order, including the spring loaded top latches and the automatic ejector. We have no doubt that this H&A Triple-Action Safety Police Hammerless would still function just as well today as when it left the factory more than 106 years ago. As you can see from the pictures, it comes with an original period leather holster that we acquired it in, maker unknown. If you have been looking for a neat vintage .32 S&W revolver for your collection that you are unlikely to run across again, this Hopkins & Allen would be an excellent choice and should continue to be a great long-term investment.
