Description: The famous Luger pistol, normally produced by DWM, was also produced by Mauser under license before and during World War II. The pistol shown is among those known as the S/42 model and is the most common variation of the Pre/World War II Lugers. This example was produced in 1937 and has matching serial numbers on everything except the magazine, which is instead marked “fxo” and has an eagle stamp with the number “37” underneath. The pistol has three acceptance stamps on the right side of the slide. The first two are an eagle over the number 63. These are military proof marks. The third is a receiver test fireproof mark. The full serial number (both numbers and suffix letter) is given on the front of the frame, while the 4-digit number is present at the bottom of the barrel and the left side of the receiver. The last two digits of the serial number are stamped on the locking bolt, the side plate, the rear and central toggle links, and the safety bar. Curiously, there is an extra four-digit number on the bottom of the trigger guard. It is unknown why the frame would have two different numbers. The slide and frame exhibit finish wear, but the pistol does not appear to have been re-blued at any point in time. Both the backstrap and front strap of the grip bear the majority of bluing loss, while the rest of the pistol has finish one would expect from a pistol that saw use in a World War. The grips exhibit minor wear. The bore itself is lightly pitted though the pits are very fine as opposed to deep pitting. The pistol should still shoot accurately with FMJ bullets (you wouldn’t use cast bullets anyways). There is one thing to note with Lugers built before and during World War 2. They were built to use the German 124gr 9mm loads. These are hotter than the usual American loads, particularly the standard 115gr load. That load may not be sufficiently powerful to fully cycle the Luger’s action. It is recommended that owners use the standard US 124gr loads at a minimum. Lugers are the most desirable of all German pistols, military or commercial. They are becoming increasingly rare as time goes by. Those interested are welcome to request extra photos.
