LETTERED c1884 mfr COLT Single Action Army CAVALRY Revolver SAA .45 Antique

DAVID F. CLARK Ordnance Inspected!

Here we present an antique Colt Single Action Army “Cavalry” Revolver, manufactured in 1884 in Hartford, Connecticut. This one is lettered as having been sold to the United States Government and delivered to the US Government Inspector located inside the Colt plant for inspection on November 26, 1884, along with 149 others.

This one features the “US” marking behind the patent dates on the left side of the frame. The barrel and cylinder are both proof marked “P”. The barrel, frame, cylinder, and grips are marked “DFC” for David F. Clark. The left side of the grip is marked “JEG” for Captain John E. Greer, who was receiving inspector for a time during the Clark years (1882-1884). The date over his cartouche appears to be 1883. The trigger guard and back strap are “G” inspector marked (it is supposed that this was a Colt employee who pre-inspected parts that were to go to the government contracts during part of the David F. Clark period). This revolver is a true rarity in its original 7 ½ inch configuration.

The Colt “Peacemaker” was introduced in 1873 and has become one of the most iconic firearms in all of history, thanks to its widespread use by the U.S. military, civilians and, more recently, in Western films. Total production numbers for the “First Generation” (c. 1873-1940) Colt Single Action Army reached 357,859. These continued to be relied upon as well as “hot-rodded” by the likes of Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, many other lawmen and gun writers of the time. The included factory letter confirms that this revolver was one of 150 revolvers delivered to the U.S. Government Inspector (D.F.C.) at the Colt plant on November 26, 1884.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. Excellent, tight action. Bright bore with strong rifling. The grips show wear and remain solid with some dents and chipping near the toe on the left. The numbers match throughout to include the barrel, frame, trigger guard, cylinder, and back strap. The number that is located on the inside of the channel into which the back strap fits is difficult to read but appears to be different. The earlier receiving inspection date of 1883 on the grip indicates that it was swapped at some point in time but still bears the correct inspectors’ initials that belong to this gun. Overall, a very nice example of a rare, full-length, and lettered Colt Cavalry Single Action Army!
