.44 RF. 24" octagonal barrel length. SN: 39066 (mfg. ca1870). Blued finish, color case hardened hammer and lever, brass frame and furniture. Smooth walnut stock with crescent butt and smooth forend. Barrel is marked in two lines "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16, 1860". Rear sight is an old, fixed block replacement with a dove-tailed front sight blade. Rifle is equipped with factory sling swivels and a three-piece cleaning rod in butt. One of the most iconic Winchester-made guns, the Model 1866 "Yellowboy" improved upon the venerable Henry rifle by adding a loading gate in the frame, a forend, and a sealed magazine tube. All issues with the operation of its direct predecessor. The Model 1866 was the first product of the newly established Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which had superseded the New Haven Arms Company. A very nice example with a substantial amount of blue on the barrel that is far above the average 1866 on the market, and that only needs a set of original sights to be correct.
