serial #203061, 12 ga., 30” barrels, both choked about full, with lightly and moderately oxidized and pitted bores. The barrels show some fading remnants of their damascus pattern their full length, intermingled with some soft brown oxidation. The matting remains nice on the rib but with the company marking still crisp. The frame and lockplates are an overall silvery pewter and dark gunmetal gray patina with speckles of oxidation here and there but the metal is mostly smooth and has some vestiges of color case-hardening beneath the hammers. The water table is neatly stamped “WF&C”, partially slightly off-struck. The characteristics of the marking and their location make us believe that they are authentic from the period of use, most fakers love to stamp “Wells Fargo” in prominent areas on the arm, and then usually more than once, this marking is not even seen unless the gun is disassembled. The checkered round knob English walnut stock rates about very good as lightly cleaned many years ago, the checkering is all there and the original checkered hard rubber widow’s peak Remington Arms buttplate is intact; the splinter forend is similar, the checkering a bit more worn. The barrels are actually on face although they do exhibit some very light lateral play and the top lever is just slightly left of center. The hammers are mostly in time and the locks seem to function properly. Included with the shotgun is a receipt from “Bachelder Master Gunmakers” of Grand Rapids, MI for inspection of the firearm, dated 2016 mentioning that “comparisons with other verified guns confirms the likelihood of authentication” assigning an approximate value in 2016 of $2500. This is a very respectable famous Remington antique scattergun with a sought after pedigree including authentic Wells Fargo and Company markings.
