Description:
This is a very rare Japanese helmet. The Imperial Naval Landing Forces were the Japanese equivalent to the U.S. Marines and like their U.S. counterparts, were part of a larger naval force, in this case the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). This helmet type was adopted by the IJN in 1932 as their own version of the Imperial Japanese Army’s Type 90 helmet. The IJN designated it as their ‘Type 2’. The helmet was officially called the ‘tetsubo’ or “steel cap”, however it was often known to the troops as the ‘tetsukabuto’ or “steel helmet”. For its probable age (80 years or more), this helmet is in remarkably good condition, with intact padded leather liner and a retention strap. There is a small kanji mark on the inside rear edge of the rim. The helmet emblem has an intact chrysanthemum. The emblem itself is slightly loose and will rotate a few degrees to either side, but it in otherwise fine shape. There is of course some rust covering parts of the surface of the helmet, understandable given its age and use. This would make a great addition to any World War II collection.
