Description:
WESTERN COSTUME CO. Movie Prop Antique CIVIL WAR WHITNEY Rifle-Musket c1860

“W.C.Co.” Marked Collector’s Item!

Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Co. Enfield Pattern 1853 Three Band Rifle-Musket, made circa 1859-62 in New Haven, Connecticut, and marked as a movie prop for the Western Costume Company. The company was founded circa 1912 by L.L. Burns, who was a collector of Indian antiquities and related items, and who would go on to work for Warner Bros. directly as head of their costume department. The W.C.CO. has outfitted many well-known films with costumes and weaponry, including Gone with the Wind, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Disney’s Treasure Island, just to name a few.

The Pattern 1853 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851. The overwhelming majority of P53 Enfield Rifles were made by commercial gun makers in Birmingham and London under contract. This gun features a ladder rear sight with a slider assembled on a base with steps and steel barrel bands. It is also equipped with two sling swivels. Whitney only manufactured around 3,500 of these rifle-muskets, with many ending up in Confederate hands.

The actual Enfield 1853 rifle-musket was used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is clear and in good shape. Solid stock containing less than expected wear. “W.C. CO” is stamped on the right side of the barrel with “CB41” on the left. This example is missing the cleaning rod.
