This is an early, all-matching Baby Russian outfitted with a filler screw on the right side of the frame where the Aldritch safety device would have been installed had the revolver been manufactured earlier. The metal retains about 40-50% original bright blue, mainly on the frame and under the barrel rib, with the balance having a mottled pewter gray and plum-brown patina, as well as small spots of pinprick pitting. The hammer has a mostly smoky gray patina, and the trigger is the same. The smooth walnut grips are numbered to the gun, and in very good condition, with a small chip at the top of the left panel, and minor handling marks throughout. The lock-up is tight, without any lateral play in the barrel, and the action is fully functional. The revolver is accompanied by a 2021 dated S&W Historical Society letter that specifies a shipment date of April 18, 1876, to R.L. Kilby Co. (no further address listed). The letter rather curiously states that the revolver "...should have the Aldritch Hammer," despite the fact that Jinks and Neal, among others, specifically state that the Aldritch Hammer (but not the frame screw) was dropped from production somewhere between serial numbers 75 – 138. Thus, this example is correct, and is is a very good example of a desirable, early S&W "Baby Russian" with the rare blue finish and walnut grips.
