Description:
Around 8,000 of these Josyln Model 1864 Carbines were purchased by the U.S. Government during the Civil War, primarily for arming Union cavalry troops.  The Joslyn Model 1864 Carbine is a single-shot breech-loading carbine with a 21" inch barrel chambered in .52 Rimfire.  It was designed with a sling bar and sliding ring on the left side of the gun for use with the single-point leather slings used by cavalry when mounted on horseback.  The Joslyn carbine was a tremendous upgrade from the muzzle-loading muskets used previously in both ease of use (particularly when mounted) and reloading speed, allowing a trooper to fire 5 shots in the time it took to fire 2 with the muzzleloader.  A Union Cavalry soldier was extremely well-armed when the Joslyn carbine and a 6-shot Colt 1860 Army revolver.  This particular example is in good all-original and un-molested condition.  It has not been excessively cleaned or "improved" in any way.  The original finish has all turned to a nice gray/brown patina that you would expect to see on a battle-used carbine that is 155 years old.  The bore in this Joslyn is actually quite good with just some light pitting and nicely-defined strong rifling throughout the barrel.  The original stock on this carbine is in good shape overall, and consistent with the condition of the rest of the gun.  The Walnut shows lots of small dings, dents, and handling marks but no major damage or eyesores.  The original U.S. Inspector's cartouches are even still visible on the left side of the stock, just above the sling bar.  All of the original stock hardware is intact and in good condition.  The action on this Joslyn 1864 Carbine is in perfect working order, and all of the controls are functional.  If you could still get this ammunition we have no doubt that this carbine would still shoot great.  This Joslyn Model 1864 Carbine is really an interesting piece of American Civil War history and would be an excellent addition to any antique arms collection.
