Description:
This is one of the nicest all-original and all-matching Imperial German Navy Lugers we have had in a long time.  This beautiful 1917-dated 1914 variation DWM P-08 Navy Luger is EXACTLY how it was brought back to the States as a War Trophy from either WW1 or WW2, it has not been altered or "improved" in any way.  The 1914 Variation Navy Luger was produced by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in 1916 and 1917, with total production reaching around 23,000 pistols.  Of these 23,000, approximately 7,900 were dated 1916 while the remaining 15,000 were dated 1917.  While new Navy Lugers were being delivered well into 1918, these were all 1917 dated guns due to the extreme transportation delays the German Navy was dealing with at that point in WW1.  The 1914 Variation Navy Luger did away with the earlier grip safety and toggle locks of the previous Navy variations and featured a 6" inch barrel, a coil-style mainspring, a short-style frame with a stock lug on the rear grip strap, a relieved sear bar, checkered Walnut or Beech grips, a fair quality rust blue finish, five straw-finished small parts, and the two-position rear-sight adjustable from 100 to 200 meters located on the rear toggle section.  By late 1916 the German War Department had dispensed with unit-marking for the remainder of WW1, so very few of these guns received unit markings like the earlier models.  While there is no way to know for sure how many of these 1914 Variation guns made it through WW1 intact, most examples on the market today are either in poor condition, non-matching, or some combination of both.  Finding a beautiful all-original and unmolested example like this one complete with one of it's original matching magazines is quite a find.  This particular DWM Navy is a 1917-dated gun serial number 2143a, made in early 1917.  The original factory rust blue finish is very handsome and clean, rating 95%.  Most of the finish wear is located on the high-edges and is likely a result of holster carry during it's servoce life with the Imperial Navy.  There is a little bit of scattered pin-prick finish loss on top of the pistol in front of the chamber date and around the "DWM" stamp from some prior surface rust being removed at some point along the way.  Both the front and rear grip straps are in excellent condition, showing no finish loss except for a touch on the high-edges of the stock lug.  All of the factory markings on this Navy Luger are crisp, clean, and 100% legible.  All of the parts that are supposed to be serial numbered are factory-stamped and matching.  The only small part that is not serial numbered is the firing pin, which IS correct for this vintage DWM Navy.  The factory golden yellow "straw" finish on the take-down lever, trigger, magazine release button, extractor spring, and safety lever is in excellent condition.  Often the first type of finish to show wear, the straw finish on this Luger is still bright and beautiful rating 97%.  The only deductions come from just a touch of fading at the front of the take-down lever and on the flat of the safety lever.  The bore in this pistol is in very good condition overall, free from any bad pitting, erosion, or defects.  The rifling is still sharp and well-defined throughout, and the lands and grooves are nice and shiny except for a few small spots of frosting.  The original serial-numbered grips (stamped on reverse with last two digits of serial number) on this DWM are spectacular, with both sides in superb condition.  Both grip panels are a perfect match to each other, fit the gun perfectly, and are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or visible wear/damage.  The checkering is still clean, sharp, and free from any oil soiling on either side.  Unlike many of the WW1 production Lugers we handle, the grips on this DWM Navy are both nice and tight to the frame with zero wiggle.  The original factory serial-numbered matching magazine with this Navy Luger is in excellent condition overall.  The main body of the magazine is still bright and clean, free from any dents or damage.  The feed lips appear to be in perfect shape, the loading button is nice and tight in the follower, and the follower spring is still nice and strong.  The original wooden bottom is the correct type for a 1917 Navy, with no concentric circles on the "buttons" and the properly stamped serial number along with the "Crown M" German Navy proof on the bottom edge.  While many people think of the concentric circle-type magazine as the only proper original Navy Luger magazine, this is not the case for late production Navy Lugers.  A large portion of the 1917-production DWM Navy Lugers came with this plain style of wood bottom, as pictured in Jan Still's book Imperial Lugers and their Accessories on pages 178 and 179.  As for function of this Luger, it is in perfect working order.  The toggle action is smooth and slick, and and the bolt goes into battery perfectly when released.  All of the controls on this Navy work 100% like the day it left the factory, nice and tight.  We took this gun all the way down to check all of the serial numbered parts and the inside of this pistol is just as clean and free from wear as the exterior.  It is very apparent that this Navy has been fired very little in it's life and has always been well cared-for.  We have no doubt that this DWM would still shoot just as reliably and accurately today as when it left the factory more than 104 years ago!  If you have been looking for a truly investment-quality Navy Luger for your collection here is your chance to get one of the best we have seen at a great price.  There is no doubt that this Navy Luger will continue to be an excellent long-term investment.
