Description: Guns Listing ID: 376358 The French were always at the forefront of firearms development and the MLE. 1874 Gras rifle is no exception. This rifle was an evolution over the Chassepot rifle, moving rifles into the realm of self-contained cartridge loading. The design of the Gras rifle was specifically set up to be more of a conversion of the Chassepot, so that the rifles could be built on existing models. The Gras rifle was the first French military rifle to accept metallic self-contained cartridges. This rifle started life as a ground up (not a conversion) MLE 1874 Gras rifle. The single shot bolt action rifle went through a factory reconfiguration in 1880 (marked M80 on receiver) to add a safety update then again, factory serviced in 1914 (marked M14 on the receiver) to accept the 8x50mmR Lebel cartridge, then again factory re-serviced around 1927 (marked 'N' on the bore) so that the rifle could accept modern 8mm Lebel loadings which had a higher chamber pressure. This rifle served from 1874 up through WWII. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: ST. ETIENNE Model: MLE. 1874 Caliber Info: 8MM LEBEL Condition: Used - Certified Barrels: 32 BARREL Finish: BLACK |
