VERY SCARCE “Tryon” Contract US Model 1841 Musket
Philadelphia Contract Only 5,000 Made Dated “1848”
Here we present an antique US Model 1841 Musket, made in 1848 by George W. Tryon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Only 5,000 were made under this contract. These were colloquially known as “Mississippi Rifles” due to their use by Jefferson Davis’s Mississippi regiment during the Mexican-American War. These really stands out from other US muskets with their handsome brass hardware, especially the very large patch boxes mounted in the stocks, as well as their shorter, handier length. They would continue in service all the way through the American Civil War on both sides of the conflict.
This one is particularly interesting for several reasons, not the least of which is that it comes from a very small contract by George W. Tryon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The lock is marked “TRYON/US” and “PHILADA/PA/1848”. In addition, this musket has undertaken the “New Jersey Alteration” when the hostilities of the American Civil War began. The model 1841 was made without consideration for a bayonet. There were as many different methods for altering these muskets to fit a bayonet as state militias adopted them. This one had its front sight removed and the muzzle end of the barrel turned down. The left side of the barrel was also marked “N.J.” This was added after the standard federal government inspector markings, like those cartouches on the left side of the stock. One reads “WAT” for Captain William A. Thornton. There are two others: one is less clear but appears to be “JH” or “JM”, while the third cartouche was intentionally stamped out with an “X”. Standard federal proof and view marks on the barrel include “US/JPC/P”. “JCP” are the initials of James P. Chapman. The barrel tang is dated “1848”. Butt plate is marked “US” and “DJP”. This last part may have significance to the NJ militia. Finally, this musket was bored out to .69 caliber during the period of use. This would make sense as many other muskets were bored for the same around this time. A new front and rear sight were added at some point. Overall, a very interesting musket that has been around for 170 years now and has seen a lot of change.
The overall condition is very good or better. The steel barrel remains bright under an old coat of light oil. The brass bears a dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape. The smooth bore is dark and in good condition. The action is excellent. Here is one scarce and unique Model 1841 “Mississippi”!
