Description:
This is an original Winchester-manufactured Model 1917 and comes with a bayonet – also manufactured by Winchester. The rifle is equipped with a sling and there is also a cleaning kit tube (with the tools) in the buttstock. The Model 1917 is one of the best military bolt actions ever built. It based upon the Model 1914 (or P14) in .303 British. While that rifle held only 5 cartridges, thanks to the .30-06’s smaller rim diameter, the 1917 can hold six rounds in the magazine. Sadly, U.S. Army stripper clips only held 5 rounds. These rifles are essentially a Mauser 1898 action with some differences. Like the Lee-Enfield rifle, the M1914 and M1917 use a cock-on-closing feature, wherein the bolt’s mainspring is loaded and rifle cocked as part of the return stroke of the bolt. This aided rapid fire, especially as the action heated up during an engagement. Unlike the Mauser 1898 action or the derivative M1903 Springfield rifle, the M1917 is not equipped with a third safety lug. Instead, as on the Chilean Mauser Model of 1895, the bolt handle recesses into a notch in the receiver, which serves as an emergency locking lug in the event of a failure of the frontal locking lugs. This would be unlikely, as the M1914 and 1917 have very strong actions. Contrary to common belief, and the movie for that matter, Sgt. Alvin C. York used the M1917 rifle during the action or October 8, 1918, for which he earned the Medal of Honor. His sidearm was of course was a Model 1911 pistol. The film Sargeant York, actor Gary Cooper used an M1903 Springfield (because that’s what the armorer had on hand) and a P.08 Luger pistol (because 9mm blanks were probably more available than .45 blanks). Sgt. York preferred the M1917 over M1903 because of the former’s rear mounted sight which worked better and provided greater accuracy at longer distances. The M1917 shown here is in exceptional condition for its age. There is some minor wear to the stock mainly on the left side. The top of the receiver exhibits what look like tiny pin prick marks. It is possible that the receiver was covered in a light rust at some point and then thoroughly cleaned as there is no visible rust now. The bore is in exceptionally pristine condition. Given that military ammo at that time used corrosive primers, it seems unlikely that this rifle was issued. Otherwise, the bore should show some form of wear. The bayonet itself is also in exceptional condition with virtually no rust on the blade itself. The markings are also in great shape. Overall, this rifle would make an excellent collector’s piece.
