Exquisite FRENCH SxS DUAL IGNITION Shotgun 16 Gauge Centerfire/Pinfire Case

Here we present an antique French Engraved and Gold Inlaid Beatus Beringer Double Barrel Pinfire/Centerfire Combination 16 Gauge Shotgun, made circa the mid-19th Century in Paris, France. Beatus Beringer of Paris and St. Etienne appears in records between 1835 and 1869. His Paris address was 26 Rue de la Monnaie.
He exhibited at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851. Aside from the "INVon BERINGER Bte A PARIS" marked Damascus barrels, the shotgun has full coverage relief engraved leafy scroll and wild game designs. This engraving may have been executed by Louis Penel of St. Etienne (active circa 1857-1870) who is known to have engraved and signed other shotguns by Beringer which display similar designs. It has a single post front sight and is mounted in a deluxe French walnut stock with checkering at the wrist.
This breech-loading pinfire and/or centerfire shotgun utilizes the trigger guard as an underlever that swivels to allow the muzzles to fall and the breech to tip up for loading and unloading. The rear of the trigger guard falls into a detent under the spring pressure of the rest of the guard (which acts as a leaf spring) to prevent the lever from swiveling at will. As for the dual ignition pinfire/centerfire aspect of this double, you will notice a small screw head on the exterior of each of the hammers. These attach a centerfire firing pin to each hammer, thus allowing the use of either of these types of shells. This is a very clean, sleek design that does everything it needs to do, sometimes with dual purposes.
The overall condition is fine. Very nice Damascus twist pattern is visible. Strong tight actions. Bright bore. This example sports a solid stock with nice checkering. Clear gold inlays atop the barrel and bottom of the trigger guard. Deeply, and finely detailed engraved frame and trigger guard. The case has clearly seen much use and is mostly bare of its original leather covering. It did its job, however, and the shotgun inside has been very well preserved.
