First supplied by the Ludwig Loewe & Company during 1895-1896, and then later by the DWM (1897-1900), the Mauser Model 1895 first made its appearance during a small arms race between Argentina and Chile in 1896 and 1898. In this period, over 80,000 Model 1895 rifles and 30,000 Model 1895 carbines were shipped and deployed to the Chilean army. The Model 1895 was also deployed to the Republic of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (more commonly known as “Transvaal”) by DWM shortly after the Jameson Raid in December 1895 to deal with the shortage of modern magazine fed rifles for the state army. Roughly 50,000 Mauser rifles were ordered but only 37,000 were delivered because DWM diverted them to fulfill their contract with the Chilean army. Due to many rifles being diverted to Chile, many of the rifles in that country bore the inscription “O.V.S” (Oranje Vrij Staat), Orange Free State. As with other early Mausers, most such arms were made by the Ludwig Loewe company. In 1896 the company consolidated its arms manufacturing, and founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken, the famous D.W.M. manufacturer. All rifles made in 1897 and onward were marked with the new company abbreviation. Therefore, any LUDWIG LOEWE marked firearm is considered an antique. Most Chilean Contract Model 1895 Rifles and Carbines found today are marked DWM, and examples by Ludwig Loewe are very hard to find. The Model 1893/1895 Mauser rifle was a significant leap in the bolt action designs that was painfully demonstrated at the battle of San Juan Hill and was a significant factor in the adoption of the U.S. M1903 rifle. The overall condition is fine. Very nice blue finish. The action is excellent and the bore is in fine condition. There is an import stamp on the right side of the barrel near the muzzle. The stock is solid and shows some use. A very nice rifle. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29 inches.
