Description:
This is an original Indian Wars Era U.S. Army No. 1 Hagner Leather Cartridge Box for .50-70 Cartridges.  This cartridge box is designed to hold 24 Metallic .50-70 Cartridges.  The brown leather is in very nice condition and pliable. There are no cracks or crazing of the leather.  There is some minor wrinkling of the leather on the fold of the flap and on the strap.  There is a US stamped in the Oval on the flap.  The retention strap and belt straps are intact and supple.  Internally it has the twenty-four bullet loops and a compartment for the Model 1868 combo tool.  The bullet loops for the cartridges are in excellent condition.  This is a very nice plus condition example.  You will have a hard time finding another, in this condition, at this price.  This will make a very nice addition to any Indian War Collection.
This box was developed by Major P.V. Hagner and was submitted and approved by the Cavalry and Infantry Equipment Boards in 1871 and 1872.  The Hagner boxes had a characteristic "Y"-shaped yoke, on the back, through which the waist belt was passed.
