Beautiful full deluxe Winchester Model 1894 rifle with Cody email sheet verifying serial number 144908 was shipped as a 32 Winchester Special rifle with 26" half octagon barrel, full magazine, checkered stock, pistol grip, Lyman front and rear sight (rear tang sight removed some time ago) and take down frame. A total of 7 special order features. Shipped in July 1902 with a return and repaired noted for June 1908 (receiver and barrel are correctly Winchester proofed). An official factory letter was ordered and should be arriving this week.
The barrel and magazine retain about 50% original blue blending with a pleasing brown patina. The action shows mostly an even gray brown patina with traces of original blue in protected areas. Metal surfaces are generally quite smooth showing just a little, old and light surface oxidation in areas. There is no play between the barrel and action when the magazine is properly indexed, although the magazine is slightly off an 1/8 of an inch. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of beautifully figured American black walnut with straight grain through the wrist and with fabulous figure beginning at the nose of the comb and back through the center of the stock on both sides. The stocks rate excellent with a slight gap between the fore arm and fore arm cap due to age drying. The bore has well-defined rifling but is gray with a touch of frost, should clean up fine and spin a bullet well. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman sporting front per the factory info and Winchester Smokeless 32 Winchester Special rear. All markings in metal remain clear and legible. The lower left tang shows assembly numbers "14251 XX" with corresponding "14251" in end grain of butt under the buttplate. A nice example of a full deluxe 1894 rifle that remains affordable.
