Description:
Manufactured by the Metropolitan Arms Company of New York City from 1864 until 1866, only about 2700 of these Police Models were made.  Essentially a copy of the Colt Model 1862 Police, the Metropolitan Arms Company Police model was chambered in .36 caliber cap and ball and featured a blue and case colored factory finish, a 5-shot half-fluted cylinder, a 4.5",5.5", or 6.5" inch barrel, and a 1-piece smooth varnished American Walnut grip.  The serial range for this model ran from 1101 to about 3800.  The one design change from the Colt Police model was the use of a pivoted loading lever assembly rather than the rack and pinion style of the Colt.  The Metropolitan Arms Company Police Models made between 1864 and 1865 are considered secondary American Civil War weapons as a large number of them ended up in service with Union troops and a small number with Confederate forces.  This particular example is serial number 2898 and is one of the Metropolitan Arms Co. marked guns, of which only 1600 were made, with the remainder of the 2700 total produced either unmarked or marked with Union Arms Company.  This Police Model is in good condition overall, and excellent mechanical condition.  Only traces of the factory finishes remain, with the balance showing a pleasing gray-blue patina that is uniform across the revolver.  All of the factory markings and serial numbers are still crisp and fully legible, and all of the screws in this pistol are in very good condition with nice slots.  The bore in the 4.5" inch barrel is excellent, showing strong and sharp rifling throughout with no major pitting or defects.  The 5 chambers of the cylinder are equally as nice, and all of the original nipples are still intact and in good condition except for one that has been mushroomed out some from a dry-firing.  The original 1-piece grip on this Police model is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage.  The wood shows some handling and wear but nothing you wouldnt expect to see on a Civil War revolver.  The action on this Metropolitan is in good working order and is still in time.  The hammer still has the half-cock and full-cock notches intact and the trigger breaks nicely from full-cock only.  The loading lever is in perfect working order and the barrel assembly is nice and tight to the frame with no slop.  All in all, this is a very neat and rare little antique revolver that is all-original and likely has some Civil War history.  This Metropolitan Arms Company Police Model would be a great addition to any Civil War weapons collection or antique American arms collection.  As an antique, this can be shipped directly to your home, no FFL needed.
