Description:
MODEL 1733 FRENCH Flintlock Cavalry Pistol 7 Years War French & Indian War

France’s First Regulation Pistol

Here we present an antique French Model 1733 Flintlock Military Pistol, made at the armory at Charleville. This was France’s first standardized military pistol. France had not long before adopted their first standardized musket in 1717. The benefits of standardizing on military hardware are obvious. These would have seen service during a very busy 18th Century: the War of the Polish Succession (1733-35), Indian wars in North America against the Chickasaw, the Fox, Iroquois, Catawba, and the Cherokee, the French Indian War (1754-63), and more. Of course, there was the American Revolutionary War during which France was an ally to the rebels.

This piece is marked “Manufacture de Charleville” on the lock and bears 3 small fleur-de-lis on the left barrel flat. The initials “LF” are branded into the bottom of the stock and engraved into the side plate. This pistol features a bulbous brass pommel, side plate, brass trigger guard and ramrod tube. The lock is flat with beveled edges and an iron flash pan. It is not difficult to imagine that this pistol was heavily used in North America and possibly picked up by some trapper, scout, or Indian. It was clearly modified during the period of use either to remedy a bent muzzle or else just to shorten the overall length just a bit for a handier weapon.

The overall condition is well-used, but functional. This pistol has a crude iron barrel band on the front to fasten the barrel to the stock, both of which were shortened (from approximately 12”) during the period of use. The iron rammer was likewise shortened to accommodate. The action is excellent. However, the cock is missing the top jaw. The bore is smooth and dim, as well as a gaping .69 caliber. The stock certainly shows much wear: there are small chips around the lock and the front of the fore stock is a bit frayed around the barrel band. This is a rare example of this early regulation military arm of France, and a piece that represents so much history.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 9-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .69 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
