Smith & Wesson did not produce a double-action hand gun for metallic cartridges until 1880 when they introduced the .38 Double Action (1st Model) (which used the same cartridge that was previously designed for the .38 single-action revolver). The new 1st model carried a bow-shaped trigger guard in place of the spur type trigger used on the single-action revolver. The cylinder stop was a rocker type, requiring a double series of stop notches on the cylinder and a series of vertical grooves to accommodate the action. 4,000 of the 1st model were made in 1880. The 2nd model started in 1880 with serial number 4,001 and ended in 1884 with serial number 119,000. 115,000 guns of the 2nd model were made. In the 2nd model, the shape of the frame left side plate was changed to rounded to strengthen the frame. The serial number of this 2nd model gun is 24,921. According to S&W historians, this gun was made in 1881 or 1882. The serial number matches on the butt of the frame, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. 3rd model 1884 - 1895 SN: 119,001 - 322,700 4th model 1895 - 1909 SN: 322,701 - 539,300 5th model 1909 - 1911 SN: 539,301 - 554,077 discontinued in 1911 Perfected Model 1909 - 1920 Since this pistol is classified as an antique firearm (built before 1899), your local FFL dealer is not required to complete this purchase.
