RARE VARIANT MODEL '90 WITH FACTORY 23" ROUND BARREL IN .22 LONG RIFLE CHAMBERING, #776707, MADE 1928. Standard for this model was a 24" octagon barrel in .22 Short, Long, WRF and very few late models in .22 Long Rifle. The round barrel was typically made for the "parts clean-up " rifles after the model was discontinued, making this a n early rare variant. Many of these round barrel Model 90s have the "Mail Order" proof mark on the barrel indicating the rifle was re-barreled at some point. These are usually very easy to spot as the mail order proof mark looks like a football (oval shape) with a "P" in the middle. Also, the .22 Long Rifle chambering wasn't offered until 1919, so an earlier gun in .22 LR is almost assuredly a re-barrel. This example has only the correct Winchester Proofs on the barrel and receiver ring and NOT a mail order proof mark. Overall excellent condition with the receiver retaining nearly all the deep blue and revealing minor areas or "lines" of the beginnings of flaking (typical of 1920s Winchester receivers that flaked blue rapidly), even the upper and lower tangs as well as the bolt retain excellent blue. The barrel and mag tube also retain nearly all of the blue with only a very minor amount of age to the blue on the forward section of barrel- you have to look carefully to detect any dulling of the blue. The stock and forend are excellent with tight wood to metal fit and showing only the lightest handling. Tight action, excellent screws and bright excellent bore! A super rare variant in superb condition.
