A James Woodward shotgun is reputed to be of the finest made English shotguns, this is no exception. This gun comes with a letter of authenticity from Purdey with the original build sheet. The buttstock is listed at 13 3/4 inches, this gun being re-stocked, most likely by Woodward, and is now at 14 1/2 inches. The fit and finish of this gun suggests, it was restocked many years ago by the most competant of gunsmiths to exhibit a flawless fit that would pass as the original stock. This fine shotgun was made in 1885 and tips the scales at 6 pounds. It has been Nitro proofed by Purdey in 1901. The checkering is sharp and crisp on both forearm and buttstock. The barrels measure 29 inches and the damascus pattern is strong, the full length of the barrels. The action is tight as new and completely on face.It is choked IC and IC, as it left the factory with wall thicknesses of .030" as measured today. The bores are as bright and smooth as new. It has cocking indicators and as a standard by Woodward it has arcaded fences. This gun has 2 1/4 drop at heel and 1 3/4 drop at face. It has a slight cast to the right, which will fit even the most discriminating shooter. The buttp[late is horn and in good condition. Upon looking at this gun you need to again remember that is is an extremely dsireable 20 gauge shotgun. 135 years later, this gun exists beautiful and well preserved.
