Description:
CASED Pair of CONTINENTAL EUROPEAN DUELING Pistols by BAUCHERON-PIRMET .50

FINE Case Colored DUELERS Made Circa 1850

Here we present two cased antique Belgian Dueling Pistols by Baucheron-Pirmet, made circa 1850 in Liege, Belgium. Pirmet was known to have worked on his own from about 1801 to 1818 and was gunmaker of King Louis XVIII in 1816. The beauty in his work is obvious.

Dueling was a ritualized affair that predated firearms. It was a way for people to settle their differences or avenge perceived slights, sometimes finally. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision. Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required.

This example showcases a few neat features that give it extreme display ability. These two have gorgeous engraving and case colors on the locks and the pommel caps. The octagonal barrels are finished brown. The locks read "FNI PAR BAUCHERON-PIRMET." They are each equipped with single set triggers and open sights. The matching barrels have a Liege proof and "NC" with other various proofs on the bottom. Carved and fluted stocks. The pair comes with a tightly fitted hardwood case with velvet lining. The case includes many accessories such as a loading and cleaning rod, a mallet, ball mold, "B. A. PARIS" marked flask, and a container for caps.

The overall condition is fine. The metal surfaces have been very nicely refinished. Case colors are vibrant. The action is strong on both pistols and the bores are in very good shape. With case hardened hardware, detailed exquisite carvings, and twisted steel brown barrels, this set will make a prodigious impact on any collection!
